As the famous quote from Orwell's Animal Farm goes: "four legs good, two legs bad", but these animals don't seem to have paid a blind bit of notice.

There you have it, our attempt to turn what is essentially a collection of amusing animals GIFs into something vaguely highbrow.

1. This dog isn't just walking, it's dancing, and doing a pretty decent job of it at that

That second dog must have already got to the end of Animal Farm. It's the only possible explanation for that expression of serious doubt and disquiet.

2. Cats are devious little creatures at the best of times. If we lose the 2-legged advantage, what next?

Just think about it: are they really your pet, or are you their unwitting, unpaid housekeeper?

3. We're starting to suspect that, actually, they all do this on a regular basis

But only when they think we're not looking. They're plotting something for sure. We don't want to alarm anyone… but has anyone ever seriously considered the possibility of an interspecies revolution?

4. See, it's about to have a fight, and it knows the 2-legged thing will give it an advantage

Please don't take this as a suggestion we think they are definitely practising in preparation for 'when the time comes'.

We're just saying we should probably remain vigilant. That's all.

5. Truthfully, we're actually much less concerned about dogs. Dogs mainly just seem to want to be liked

The question is, to be liked by whom? It's possible they may be easily swayed. To continue the laboured Animal Farm analogy, dogs are kind of like Mollie the carriage horse.

We just need to make sure we're the ones offering the better treats and chew toys.

6. Cats though, cats are learning younger and younger

Has this seemingly adorable little kitty already been recruited by feline revolutionary forces? We have no way of knowing for sure.

7. In comparison, this German Shepherd just seems to be trying to entertain us

At the same time though, we wouldn't fancy our chances against it in a fight, even without the two extra usable limbs.

8. "Look, it thinks it's people!" is suddenly starting to sound a lot more sinister, isn't it?

For all we know, not taking them seriously could just be making them even angrier.

9. To be honest, we're not quite sure what to think about rabbits

We did see some hares boxing once - and it appeared to get pretty vicious - but at the same time we're pretty confident we'd have both size and intelligence on our side.

10. This dog is just awesome because it doesn't even have four legs, but it's learnt to make do

No negative comments here whatsoever. Dog: you are incredible, and an inspiration to us all.

11. On a less positive note: this particular cat has not only matched our two-limbed walking abilities, but actually bettered them

Unless you did a lot of gymnastics at school or something, we bet you can't do that.

Spoiler: the pigs in Animal Farm turned out to be massive hypocrites anyway, so these guys were probably right to pay no attention to the whole "two legs bad" thing. To quote:

It is the sight of Squealer walking upright, on his hind legs. At this moment, all of the pigs leave the farmhouse in single file, all upright on two legs. Finally, Napoleon emerges from the farmhouse, upright and carrying a whip.

So basically, power corrupts - and the only reason animals aren't making funny GIFs of us to laugh at on the internet is because we happen to be the ones with hands and opposable thumbs - and thus the ones in control of the smartphones. Or something.

And we're almost certain that none of them are actually plotting to usurp us as the dominant species. That would just be ridiculous… right?
